Helko Werk's Axe Sharpening Stone is the perfect field sharpening tool, made in Germany. The contoured shape is easy to grip and allows for safe, simple sharpening. Our stone's dual-grit design offers a coarse side (120 grit) and fine side (320 grit). The coarse side should be used to restore dull edges, while the fine performs finer sharpening.

This stone may be used dry, or with water or oil as a lubricant. Using oil will produce the best results, and it is fine to mix uses of water, oil, and dry over time. Made in Germany from ceramic silicon carbide abrasive, the stone measures 3 inches (7.5 cm) in diameter and 1 inch (2.5 cm) in height, weighing 6.9 oz (195g). It includes a lightweight aluminum protective case.

If properly cared for, a Helko Werk axe will last a lifetime. When it comes time to resharpen the blade, always use quality sharpening implements as they are the surest and most effective means of achieving a perfect edge. Sharpening frequency will depend on usage, wood type, weather, and maintenance routines.

Helko Werk's Dual-Sided Axe File has a double-cut pattern for rapid material removal for reprofiling, or removing dings and nicks from an axe edge. The single-cut teeth are for finer touch ups, finishing, and deburring. This file is made from German C125W2 high carbon tool steel.

Proper handle care will significantly prolong its life. Maintain and protect the handle with boiled linseed oil, applying multiple coats over a couple weeks to fully saturate and form a strong, protective finish. Use 150 grit sandpaper to smooth chips and restore the finish, re-oiling afterwards. Keep the eye saturated to prevent drying and shrinking.

Always use a sheath to protect the axe blade, which will prevent accidental injury and edge damage. Leather oils or conditioners should be used to maintain and reinvigorate the leather. Store the axe in a cool, dry place, avoiding direct sunlight, heat sources, and excessive moisture.

High grade carbon steel is susceptible to rusting over time. Rust can be prevented by keeping the axe head well oiled. If rusting occurs, use steel wool or an abrasive to remove it, then wipe down with Axe-Guard Head Oil, a metal protecting and rust preventative product safe for leather or wood.
